English is the official and mandatory language used onboard of our ships. Because of our international guests some of the crews are also requested to speak German or French. Additional languages are always welcome.
The length of the contract varies depending on the position you going to work on board. There are contracts of 8 months, 6 months and even 4 months. When you take part in the selection process, you will be informed according to the position you applied for.
Some nationalities do not need Visa and some others need; it always depends on the itinerary of the ship. The company will inform you what kind of Visa you will need, if necessary.
STCW must be an investment made by the crew members. Mystic Cruises does not reimburse STCW.
We have limited space in the crew cabins so you should bring only what you really need. Clothes like jeans, shorts, sweaters, shirts, swimming clothes and the most important is to bring comfortable Shoes. Also, personal hygienic items like teeth brush/paste, shampoo, soap, deodorant, shaving cream, hair dryer. You can also bring a personal towel.
If you take any medication, MUST bring enough for the duration of your contract with you. You will need to bring a Medical Prescription.
It depends on the position you will work in on the ship, it can be up to 4 roommates.
Yes, it is possible that the company may be able to accommodate this request, although this depends on the rotation and the fact that both individuals will be working on board.
Yes, there is a laundry available to the crew members where they can use to wash personal clothes and uniforms.
Yes, there are different types of areas where you can socialize with your colleagues in crew gym, crewmess, open decks but the most popular is the crew bar.
All the crew members need to be ready for any emergencies onboard, therefore we have weekly training to prepare the crew for that. We call it Crew Drills. Every crew member is assigned an emergency duty which they will be trained on and practice during regular boat emergency drills.
We suggest you bring onboard an amount of $200/$300 US dollars to cover any emergencies during your travel and before you get your first payment. You can also bring a credit card with you.
Mystic Cruises makes payments to crew members via bank transfer in either dollars or euros.
Fees are applied according to nationality. The Union fee is 1%, applied to all crew members. Some nationalities pay an additional 0.7% fee because they are part of the Portuguese social security agreement.
Union fee deduction is in accordance with (CBA), article 20, between Mystic Ocean/Cruises and FESMAR.
The vessel you will work on will depend on our operational needs, therefore, there is no possibility for the crew to choose what vessel he wants to join.
As we have guests onboard all the year round, you may not have a full day off but don´t worry, you will have time to rest, to visit the places while the vessel is docked, according to your working schedule.
Yes, you will! All the ships have internet available to employees (fees apply). If you bring your own laptop, Ipads or smartphones the wifi is also available (fees apply). But please remember that you will be working on open waters and internet connection is not always available it may vary on the ship´s location and the weather.
