Expedition Teams: the soul behind every polar landing

At the far edges of the world, where ice shapes the landscape and nature sets the pace, nothing happens by chance. In polar destinations, every landing, every step ashore, and every moment of discovery is made possible by the expedition teams, the true heart of every Mystic Cruises voyage.

On board each expedition vessel, a dedicated team of 17 specialists transforms remote regions into meaningful, memorable experiences. They ensure safe operations, share their expertise with passion, and provide context to every landscape, allowing guests not only to visit the Arctic or Antarctica, but to truly understand them.

Careful and constant coordination underpins every operation. The Expedition Leader and Assistant Expedition Leader work closely with the Master to plan each outing, assessing weather conditions, ice, and tides. In parallel, the kayaking team, led by a Kayak Master, monitors weather windows, manages rotations, and selects the best locations to explore the coastline at sea level. An onboard photographer captures defining moments, from first footprints in the snow to unexpected wildlife encounters, turning each day into a visual story guests relive night after night.

In a truly international environment, clear communication is essential. For this reason, when needed, Mandarin interpreters accompany guests throughout the voyage, providing real-time translation of announcements, briefings, lectures, and daily recaps, as well as assistance in the landing preparation area and during shore operations.

The expedition guiding team brings together specialists from a wide range of disciplines. Marine biologists, mountaineers, historians, birders, sailors, university professors, and active researchers share not only scientific knowledge but also first-hand field experience. They drive the Zodiacs, lead landings and guided wildlife safaris, and support activities such as hiking, the Polar Plunge, kayaking ,and polar camping.

Beyond what guests see, there is essential work taking place behind the scenes. The team manages, cleans, and prepares all expedition equipment, from parkas and rubber boots to technical gear, in accordance with strict biosecurity protocols designed to protect these fragile environments.

Days start early, often before 06:00 am, and extend well into the evening, sometimes until 10:00 pm. Throughout the journey, it is the dedication, discipline, and passion of the expedition teams that shape every experience. It is no coincidence that guests consistently highlight the expedition team as one of the most memorable aspects of their voyage, clear proof that expert-led expeditions define the Mystic Cruises experience.
